Harley-Davidson "Semi" Smart Security System

OK - time for the "Prospect" to earn his " Colors". For about the last year we've all heard the stories of No-Start failures on Harley's. Most of what I've heard assumes the security system to be at fault. All seem to be at fuel stops - coincidence ? I want to do some research & testing on this issue. Anyone who has had this failure and wants to help raise their hand. Good... Hey ! You in the back, pay attention ! Thank you. Now, where was I ? Oh yea. What I need from... Sorry, you can put your hands down now. What I need from anyone with this failure is year & model, any downloads (Stage 1, 2), any DTC's stored in the ECM ( I'll get to that in a minute). A description of the failure : did the lights work- turn, break, head, dash lights ? Did engine crank/ not crank ? DID YOU RESET TRIP METER BEFORE / AFTER FUELING ? ( Don't ask yet, I'm just getting started on the Failure Analysis). Name / brand of gas station. You get the idea, the more detail the better. Plus, I would prefer description's of the failure be sent email. Some of them may be somewhat lengthy, so I think email would be easier (link on profile page).
Now, getting the DTC's from the ECM. Note: This is for stock ECM. Any aftermarket ECM or Tuner - contact mfg. For every test, handlebar OFF/RUN switch must be in the RUN position. DO NOT START ENGINE !!!

DTC: Diagnostic Trouble Code
H-DSSS: Harley-Davidson Smart Security System
ECM: Electronic Control Module
TSM: Turn Signal Module
TSSM: Turn Signal / Security Module
HFSM: Hands Free Security Module
SP: Speedometer

Make sure all fuses are good and correct size. Off/Run in RUN position, trans. in neutral.

Test 1 : Quick Systems Check.
Turn ign. on - watch dash lights - all dash lights should come on then turn off. Check eng. light should turn off in 4 sec. - all systems are normal. If check eng. light stays on for 8 sec. or turns off then comes back on, you have issues. Note: oil & neutral light will stay on - depending on configuration. Turn off ign. End Test 1.

Test 2 : WOW Test (don't ask, have no idea).
Any logged codes will look like U1064, P0605, B1145 etc...
Push & hold odometer reset - turn ign. on - immediately release reset. Speedometer / Tach should sweep full range - dash lights come on then turn off - same as in Test 1. Leave ign. on.
"diag" should be in the LCD screen. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Note: to exit Diag. Mode at any time, turn ign. off and start over. Now, with "diag" in the LCD :
Note: press means press & release quick - hold means hold till screen changes.
Press reset
PSSPT in screen
P is flashing - this will check ECM for codes
Hold reset - what you see are stored codes for the ECM - if none it will read "none"
Press reset - what you see is part# for ECM Module
Press reset
PSSPT in screen
Press reset to scroll to S flashing
S flashing - this will check TSM / TSSM / HFSM for codes
Repeat as above to SP flashing
SP flashing - this will check Speedometer for codes
Repeat as above to T flashing
T flashing - this will check Tach for codes - if none installed will read "no rsp"
Turn ign off. Your done. Record any codes.

If you had a No-Start failure, you may or may not have any logged codes. A fault that happens once, and does not happen again will be auto cleared after 50 ign. cycles (stupid softwear).

Bravo! Even though a lot of this very important tech talk is like mumble jumble to me, I try very hard to understand and learn when it's explained to me like this. Thanks for the lesson Dr.

BTW...Yes, I think a t-shirt prize should be in order. I'll see if I can find you a wet one!

LOL LadyR! Too bad Caveman took those pics off his blog from the contest! :)

I have to say, none of this makes much sense to me either, but I also try to understand it. But I really don't need to because I don't anticipate running into this issue: my bike is an '84 Ironhead Sporty and Caveman rides an '88 Sporty. We don't need no stinking security. ;)

However I'm sure many in our group could use your research so they aren't stuck at gas stations anymore! :)

HI Dr.

I understood exactly what you were saying. But I've changed out my module to a Dyna unit so it doesn't work as you say. But I've seen my mileage try to tell me something in the past after playing with the trip button. I knew it was in some sort of diagnostic mode but I couldn't tell what it was trying to tell me. I'll have to Dyna’s web site and see if I can find this information. For the record I've never had this no start issue which means it could be in the engines ECM instead of in the turn signal/alarm module.

I have no alarm. Therefore, no clue of what diagnostic gibberish you were referring to exactly. But it sounds good anyway. You win the Wet T-shirt that Lady R speaks of. I hope it's pictures, and she shares with the rest of us. (LOL)

I'm with Mr M...no security system.

It's funny though, you sound just like me in my classroom: "you in the back, pay attention!" LOL

fasthair: Guess we're in the "GEEK" club.

lady r., ann, mr. m:
I deal with this all the time. So to me it makes sense, sorry.

mrs rc: me, in a classroom, LOL.
I do teach this gibberish, but in a shop environment were I can still throw a wrench at a missbehavin' student.

I find that wrenches of 1 1/4 and up are the best for throwing :) It seems to really get attention when it hits.

Yep. It happened to me not too long ago on my 2008 1200L Sporty. No upgrades on it other than handlebars, being lowered to fit me, & a new seat. I stopped at a gas station to fill up and it would not start. The lights went on and off. Not the battery. I called Harley and they tried to override it with me on the phone. No such luck. I had to have it towed to Harley. They redid the fobs and said it wouldn't happen again. Now I got a couple of different reasons for this: electrical pumps in the station disengaged the security system. I did not over fill so I know it wasn't that. I called Harley in MI and asked them and they said it might be the battery and they never heard of electrical gas station pumps causing the problem. On my tow home, the tow driver said he has picked up a few bikes with the same problem in the Long Beach, Los Alamitos area and was told the same thing.
Go figure.
Let me know when you know.
I think its a plain old defect and Harley needs to recall it, pay us back for it or replace it.

kt did: Harley may a point(right on top of thier dunce cap heads). I have seen batteries sit on the shelf a # of years before use. Weak/bad cell= problems. Dealer should load test for free. Battery provides everything at start up.
If the fob is a issue there will be hell to pay (from Harley).
That CE-consumer electronics and FCC ID# on the back means it has been tested to accept ANY interference.

Sorrry this is so late. I have been adding a Smart Alarm to my '09 FXDC so I googled issues with it. Reading this forum, it brings to mind an issue I ran into ealrier this year. I am a music DJ as a hobby and I have a wireless microphone. The gig I had, had speakers that night for two hours and then announcements all night. When the night was over, a guy came up to me and said that for some reason all of the car remotes nearby were not working, all night, until I turned off my DJ equipment. It dawned on everyone that it was my wireles mic that interferred with the remotes. No one could get in their cars within 100 feet of my system. Could it be the same for this FOB? Just my .5 cent opinion, it's a down economy or I could've afforded 2 cents

I performed all the tests in the suggested series, not a code anywhere, lights work as advertiesed , blinker lights as required, changed FOB battery, still 1 out of 10 times , turn ign on, run switch to on, hit start and nothing, HD techs have no clue..... Now what?

Time and attendance systems (or ‘clocking in machines’) offer a simple and systematic way of tracking and organising the work hours of your employees. Moreover these systems are user friendly and can be used by anyone within very little time consumption. The Biggest advantage of Biometric Time-Attendance over manual tracking is better security.

You can start the bike by manually entering the code if the FOB is not working or has a dead battery.

Its such as you learn my mind! You appear to know so much
approximately this, like you wrote the e-book in it or something.
I feel that you just could do with some % to force the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog.
An excellent read. I will certainly be back.
