CA Helmet Law Update

California Assembly Bill AB 1205, to amend the CA helmet law, survived the reading on 3-30-09 and has been sent to the Transportation Committee with a hearing set for 4-20-09. And one more coauthor signed on. There are now eight. We might have a chance this time. But we as a voting block must remember that these people work for us, not the other way around. Take a minute and send your Senator a email. If you don’t make your voice heard now, don’t complain later.

California Senate Bill SB 435, motorcycle smog check, also survived it’s first reading (ugh). It’s set for a hearing on 4-14-09. The good news is that not one person has signed on as a coauthor. Hopefully they see it as an expense that is not justified at this time.

Here’s another CA bill that motorcyclist may be interested in. AB 357. I love the bill number. It will change the concealed carry language from “may issue” to “shall issue”. What the hell is going on in California? Are they actually trying to give the people “Rights”? Will wonders never cease.

WillyD, I hope the CA helmet law is amended. I'm assuming it would mean helmets are only mandatory if you're under 18? That's how it is here.

In Maricopa County, we have to get our motorcycles emissions tested. I believe this is the ONLY county in the US where they do this. It really sucks. I hope SB 435 does not pass.

Statistics be damned!! I think everyone should have a choice if they wear a helmet or not! Doesn't California allow novelty helmets anyway? So, what is the point of a helmet law. Has anyone ever asked that question?

To much beer already today since I can't ride.

We should all have a choice!!! That is why we live in this country isn't it?

Ann: Over 18, passed the safety course, or had your licenses for 2 yrs. Smog check – Blah!

AHD: Statistics? Did you know that according to statistics, 95% of all statistics are made up on the spot? Including this one :)
No, CA doesn’t allow novelty helmets. They do tolerate them for the most part.

IHG: I’m sure the powers-that-be would say: “Sure you got a choice. Now pay the ticket dirtbag”! :(

If you want to defeat the universal helmet law, there's a way for you to make a real difference - today. Start by subscribing to Helmet Law Email Alerts at WWW.B4BS.NET.

"Bikers for Bill Sponsors" is a network of bikers that work as campaign volunteers for biker-friendly candidates in key legislative races. This is the single most effective way to build a legislative majority. And only a legislative majority can repeal the universal helmet law.

All we need is your email address and zip code - nothing more. We'll notify you when there is a neaby race that needs your support. Help legislators when they need you most, and they'll totally support you at the state capitol.

For more information, check out the March/April issue of the Bailing Wire, the official newsletter of ABATE of California. Or just go to WWW.B4BS.NET and read "How it Works."

Don't feel so bad. You're situation could be much worse; you could be in the People's Republic of Massachusetts. We're lucky we can still squeeze a piss on our own without say-so from Beacon Hill.

Sturdi: Thanks for stopping by. Good info. Yes, there is strength in numbers.

Mr. M: Your welcome.

“Joker”: I hear that pretty soon they’re going to limit us to two pisses a day. Water conversion and all that.

I'm on it! I'm writing! I'm checking into Sturdi's info also.
Thanks!

As far as 357? Well, considering that out Salinas homicide rate is worse that Oakland's now, it's about time law abiding folks can take care of themselves. I really hope this goes through. I'm tired of being an outlaw just because I wish to protect myself from those who could give a rat's ass about themselves and even less of a nat's ass about the rest of the world.

Get active and contact your representatives whenever something like this comes up. Nobody is going to preserve your rights for you; Stand up and fight for your rights!

Emails to your reps are OK; phone calls are even better. Calls are taken a little more seriously. Even if you don't live in California, contact the reps and let them know that you'd be more likely to visit and vacation in their state if they had more biker-friendly laws. Nevada is voting on some helmet legislation right now so I contacted their reps and got a very favorable response. State reps seem to really respond when tourist dollars are involved.
