Corvair Trike

The other day Dave called. Said he was at Wolf’s house and I had to get over there and see what just pulled up. OK, any reason for a ride. Potato Potato over to Wolf’s. It was worth the ride. The story I got on the Corvair Trike: The owner’s uncle started the build in 1970. Took about ten years to finish. It’s been sitting in the barn under a tarp ever since. It has about two hundred miles on it. He just inherited it and it’s for sale – cheap.

The thing I like is the engine in the middle instead of the rear like most builds. All of the British parts from the 60’s and 70’s are pretty cool also.

I like that way more than most trikes. This one still looks like it's related to a motorcycle.

Yup, it was pretty damned cool. If I had the money I would have bought it right there.

Very cool. That would make a kick-ass BACA trike. :)

Dean: He thinks it’s from a Triumph. Not sure of year or model.

B.B.: He called you, but your phone was busy.

mq01: Get some pictures when she’s done.

Big D: I believe someone will be calling you.

Mr. M: He said it rides just like a old bike.

Dave: If you had the money you’d get your bike painted and cover up that primer.

Allen: I said cheap, not scrap metal.

Ann: Yes it would.

No surprise my friend Big D is all over that like stink on shit!

I'm not a big fan of trikes in general, but I'd put my take on this pretty much like Mr. Motorcycle did. It's pretty friggin' cool!

Speaking of trikes, has anyone noticed that in the 2010 models H-D has unveiled a Street Glide trike? If you haven't seen it, go check it out on H-D's website. What a beautiful trike - it's about time they started making them a litle cooler and somehow "younger" looking.

Joker: As far as trikes go, this one is pretty cool. I guess because everything is homemade. Nothing from a kit. I want to get some more pictures of it. I was looking at it again yesterday and there was some really interesting ways of making things work.

I agree. The Street Glide trike is nice. Dave’s only comment when he saw it; “That’s obscene!”

Dr. Wrench

I have questions on how the transaxle is reversed to allow for mid-engine design. It appears to be an automatic trans so how do you reverse axle? Do you know how they do this ? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Rich

The reason the engine is able to set forward is because someone has rebuilt it with a reverse rotation cam shaft. This was very popular to do back in the day with VW air cooled vans. The Corvair engine is bullet proof and had double (or more) horsepower. Dune buggy guys prefer running a corvair engine with vw running gear. Clark's Corvair still sells the kits to do the conversion.

how did you hook gear shift

If the cam is reversed would you have to get starter that's reversed ?
