Home of the California International Air Show, The California Rodeo and The National Steinbeck Center. Nicknamed “The Salad Bowl Of The World”. Welcome to Salinas, California. A great place to live, and apparently die.
As of midnight 1/15/2009, Salinas has had 6 homicides and 10 shootings. The population of Salinas is about 150,000. So with the help of teachers who, 35 years ago, would kick my ass if I didn’t pay attention in class, and if the ammo holds out, these are the figures I came up with for 2009: We’re on course to have 145 homicides and 243 shootings. If you live in Salinas you have a 1 in 1034 chance of being murdered. Or, if you would only like a little pain, you have a 1 in 617 chance of being shot.
Most of this is assumed to be “gang related”. But since the on again off again, start it up, shut in down “Gang Task Force”, is all part-time personnel, no one is really sure. Just don’t park for 92 minutes in a 90 minute zone. They’ll get you every time. Our Mayor has however taken action. So far he has “fasted for peace” twice. This is a good thing. The fat bastard needs to loose some weight. You know, his health and all.
Now that you’re in a happy uplifting mood, I’ll tell you why I mentioned this “good” news. Bloggers seem to be the eyes and ears of common folks all over our country. Is this kind of behavior increasing everywhere, or just certain areas? The total disregard for human life. The kill or be killed mentality. Is it just here? Or do you see more and more brutal crimes in your communities also? And if so, any ideas why? Are people just becoming more evil?
“Guns don’t kill people. Husbands who come home early kill people”
**CLARIFICATION** After I put this Post up, I had second thoughts and decided to clarify a point. “I am not against gang-bangers killing gang-bangers”. As a matter of fact, as long as they are killing each other, and “only” each other, it’s good for the economy. Look at all the people they help keep employed: Gun mfg’s. Ammo mfg’s. Used car lots (needed for drive-by’s). The police, fire and medical personnel. Coroner’s offices and funeral homes, just to name a few. Not to mention the jobs that open up when they quit showing up for work. So if they want to kill each other, be my guest. A bit of advise though: Learn how to us your damn gun so you hit what your aiming at, not a innocent by-stander.

I think violent crimes are on the rise everywhere. I believe this happens everytime the economy takes a shit. So, this may not be the best year for violent crimes (depending on which side you're on), but the good news is: it can only get better. I think. :)
Even with the seriousness of your post you managed to make me laugh out loud with your comment about our friend Dennis, totally agree!
Little to no crime in the suburb I live in. However, you get to the Twin Cities, Minneapolis & St. Paul, that's another story.
Wow, 1 in 1034! Salinas should be very proud if it's self. But, they are not quite what East Palo Alto, CA was in the early 90's. You had a 1 in 500 chance of being murdered. Awesome. Keep it up Salinas...you can do it!!!
I live in a small mountain community and the only problem we have is hicks assaulting sheep wearing velcro gloves!!
Those are not very good numbers! Our crime rate goes up and down according to the mood of the economy also. Here, in Mongtomery, we have LOTS of black on black crime here, and we have been having more and more nice neighborhoods being infiltrated lately with Drug related activity.
Here's one for ya. Last year, a young Police officer, pulled a car over for a traffic violation. When he got up to the window, without any warning, the driver shot him in the face, then again while he laid on the ground. There's seems to be no fear and no respect anymore.
This is why we need to take up arms and rely on ourselves for protection. The day they (the Government goofballs) take that right away from us, we'll be in serious trouble, cause the boys in the hood will be loaded and ready!
This is sad to hear.
Of course, we have the "hood" here in Boston too. We also have our own Fat Bastard at the helm, except he's affectionately known as "Mumbles." It's hard for the police to control the gang activity, because the bangers all have rights don't you know. Rights the terrified citizens stuck in these fetid neighborhoods apparently don't have. Constant media attention about what they've dubbed "racial profiling" has all but hobbled the cops. They're all afraid they're going to end up on YouTube beating the shit out of some punk who deserves it and lose their jobs. Funny how all these videos don't show the shit the perp was doing 5 minutes before the cops commenced said beating, but I digress.
I could have these problems cleared up in a matter of a few days. Somehow though, I doubt they'd approve of my methods. That's the fate of a guy like me who believes in the end justifying the means.
Ann: I hope it gets better. But I’m not holding my breath.
B.B.: New nickname: “Dennis The Menace”?
Mr. M: I hope your little piece of Heaven stays that way a long time.
Mastercheif: Sung to the tune of Ba Ba Black Sheep:
Ba Ba – your name here- have you any wool,
Yes sir yes sir two hands full!
Lady R: Hope they caught the fu*ker. I’m thinking the Charles Bronson “Death Wish” movies would be good training material.
“Joker”: Yep. I can tell that we are definitely using the same playbook on how to put a end to this shit.
It's on the rise just about everywhere. We've raised a generation of kids who have little regard for life and no regard for authority. Damn yuppie generation gave too many rights to kids and now you can't kick their ass when they deserve it. I'm not talking about abuse, mind you. I'm talking about the good old-fashioned ass-beating like we got when we deserved it. A whole generation of kids grew up with very little guidance and no consequences for their actions.
Oh, totally agree with Lady R.
I'm locked and loaded.
Dean: You ain’t shiting there brother! A little discipline can go a long way.
